championship rings and last year was routinely referred to as "The Best Player On the Planet." The other is nicknamed the "Chosen One" and the "King." They are Kobe Bryant, 30, and LeBron James, 24. And in the nation's barbershops, bars and locker rooms and on radio, TV and the Internet, the debate rages: Has James surpassed Bryant as the NBA's best player? Bryant had something to say about it last Sunday in Cleveland, where his Los Angeles Lakers beat the Cavaliers 101-91 to sweep the season series. That came the same week Bryant scored a modern Madison Square Garden record of 61 points against the New York Knicks. Two nights later, James scored 52 and came within a rebound of his 21st triple-double. But what do the NBA cognoscenti think? USA TODAY posed the question to the league's general managers, who asked that their responses remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the topic. Eleven thought it was too close to call or the topic too hot and abstained. Of the 19 GMs left, 12 gave the nod to Bryant, seven to James. Considering the NBA's talent, including Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard, is the question even fair? "The last time I looked, the Celtics were champions, and Kevin Garnett isn't too shabby," NBA Commissioner David Stern said. "Tim Duncan might be one of the greats to ever play our game, and the Spurs are challenging. I actually think it's just the 'media story of the day.' " Talking to league GMs ...
